Q: Can bust enhancement treatments offered at beauty salons lift a droopy, post-natal bust-line? I've spent almost $10,000 on a package but have yet to see much improvement. Salon staff simply recommend more treatments with a new machine that would cost even more.

A: Before you subject your delicate decolletage to further trauma, I have plastic surgeon Dr Marco Faria-Correa of East Shore Medical Centre to bust boob-enhancing myths.

He says there are no scientific papers or reviews that show reliable results from salon-administered bust enhancement services. There are also no massages that can tone the skin or enhance breast tissues.

Conversely, aggressive massages can cause pain and trauma to the breast. Such kneading can lead to the swelling of breasts, giving the appearance of fuller, bigger and even firmer breasts. But when the swelling subsides, so will the so-called results.

Steer clear, too, of injections such as fillers, collagen, silicone, gel or fat injections, says Dr Marco, as they may cause white spots, cysts and calcification in the breast tissue which can affect cancer diagnosis.

The only proven method for enlarging the breasts is through plastic surgery with silcone implants.

Also, when there is excess flabby skin around the breasts but the patient is happy with their size, surgical techniques can be used to lift and tighten the chest area.

The cost of of breast augmentation or breast lift surgery, which is about $10,000 and above, may work out to be cheaper than going to a beauty salon.
