Weight gain after abdominal pain

Q. My sister, 25, has been living in Dubai for the past two years. She is a cabin crew member, active and in good health. Recently, she felt a sudden sharp pain in the upper part of her abdomen.

She also gained 8kg in a week. She gained weight even after skipping meals. She could not fit into her uniform and was forced to take leave.

Could you please explain why she could have gained so much weight in such a short period of time?

A. Upper abdominal pain is a common gastrointestinal symptom. It is commonly due to an acid problem or irregular movement of the stomach and intestine, especially in young individuals.

Gallbladder stones and pancreatic inflammation, that is pancreatitis, may also cause acute pain in the upper part of the abdomen.

However, abdominal pain with excessive weight gain is uncommon. It is important to rule out intra-abdominal mass or fluid retention leading to rapid weight gain. A computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen may be accurate in diagnosing these conditions.

If no abdominal problem is found, medical consultation with an internist/endocrinologist is needed to rule out hormonal or metabolic disorders.
