Q: I'M relatively young but I seem to have a weak bladder and constantly go to the toilet. Isn't this something that only affects elderly men?
A: Many men have bladder control problems for a variety of reasons, regardless of age. However, older men aged 40 years and above are more prone to have poor bladder control, often due to prostate enlargement. Neurological diseases, infections, diabetes, certain medications and caffeinated beverages are possible underlying causes.
Saw palmetto and pumpkin seed are well regarded herbs used primarily to relieve symptoms associated with a weak bladder such as increased urination and weak urine flow. Long term use of a formulation containing these herbs is proven safe and beneficial for regulating urination and improving the well-being of men.
If infection such as urinary tract infection (UTI) is the cause of urination problem, probiotics (friendly bacteria) may be helpful. Lactobacillus acidophilus GR-1 and Lactobacillus reuteri RC-14 help to prevent infections by replenishing good bacteria in the urethra. The following are some tips for maintaining urinary system:
- Drink plenty of water, at least 1.5 litres (six to eight glasses) daily.
- Practise good toilet habits.
- Increase intake of fruits and vegetables to promote regular bowel movement.
- Exercise regularly to prevent constipation, keep the pelvic floor toned and maintain healthy weight.
