5 tips to surviving a buffet

The wide and tantalising choices at a buffet may spell disaster to someone who is trying to maintain a healthy diet or weight.

It may not easy to resist the delicious line up of food, but here are some tips on enjoying a buffet while keeping your health in check.

1. Don't skip meals before the buffet. You may think that skipping meals is a ticket to eating more because there will be more 'room' in your stomach, but it may backfire on you. Not only does it slow down your metabolism, you may be likely to eat more than you should. Instead, try eating a lighter lunch that is high in fibre so that you can feel full for a longer period of time.

2. Look over the selections first. Instead of trying to squeeze as much food as you can on your plate, remind yourself that there will be time to take more food later, says the American Institute of Cancer Research (AICR).

3. Practise the two-thirds rule. AICR recommends that you fill two-thirds of your plate with vegetables, fruits and grains and one-third or less with some source of protein, like meat, cheese and eggs. If you are indulging in higher fat options, remember to balance it with several lower fat choices.

4. Follow your body's hunger signals. Don't try to stuff yourself any further when your body is telling you to stop. Regularly over-eating high fat and sugary foods may put you at risk for diabetes or heart conditions.

5. Get a table far away from the buffet table. The closer you are to the buffet table, the easier it is to mindlessly take an extra helping, even if you are full.
