Holy mackerel!

If you eat 500 grams of kale and two mackerel a day, you'll slow down ageing, says International Anti-Ageing Institute director Krisada Sirampuch.

Krisada recently told a Thailand Centre of Excellence for Life Sciences seminar at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre all about anti-ageing agents.

"Human ageing starts when we turn 20," he said. "Some people may look older than their age, while others look younger, because they take care of themselves."

He said the main cause of the negative effects associated with ageing is free radicals. Daily activity, sunlight, wind and even the way one breathes can put these free radicals into the body.

That means you're getting older every day.

Many people feel they're not healthy enough, even though they try hard, including getting annual check-ups and taking dietary supplements and vitamins.

"The secret is balance," Krisada said. "Some vitamins, such as A, C and E, work well together and in proportion. You should check with a nutritionist about proper diet."

Vitamins and minerals essential to good health can be found in foods like kale, gourds and spinach. Mackerel contains omega 3, considered the best anti-ageing agent of all.

Krisada also recommended meditation as a route to a stress-free and healthy mind. Regular meditation, he added, releases endorphins, which can make you look five years younger.

"There's no need to eat expensive vegetables like broccoli or pricey fish like salmon. Kale and mackerel are just as good at slowing the ageing process."
