Did marathon cause death?
Thu, Nov 08, 2007
AP (Associated Press)

SHORTLY after completing the New York City Marathon on Sunday, Dr Matthew P. Hardy, a research scientist, returned to his Manhattan apartment and died. He was 50.

His wife Dianne confirmed that the cause was a clot in his coronary artery, which sent him into cardiac arrest.

She said: 'After the preliminary autopsy, the doctor told me it could have happened at any time. So it may or may not be related to the marathon.'

However, Dr Jeffrey Moses said that running the marathon 'is a very likely explanation' why he died.

He said: 'When you exercise, your blood gets stickier. So the likelihood of a clot forming during that period is higher.

'The clot probably formed during the marathon.'
