More men are now seeking treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED), also known as impotence. It refers to the inability of a man to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for his partner's needs. He then has difficulty having sex or performing other sexual activities. Although it is more common in older men, it can occur at any age.
When the problem is ongoing, it may create anxiety, relationship problems and affect self-esteem. It could also be a sign of an underlying health problem.
While some find it embarrassing to talk with their doctor about sexual issues, it is often worth the effort to seek medical help for the problem. Treatments range from medications to surgery and can help restore sexual functions for most men. We bring you resources from the library to help you understand more about this common health issue in men.

Impotence: A Cultural History by McLaren, Angus.
Chicago, Ill.: University of Chicago Press, c2007
Call no.: R 616.6922 MAC
(Available for reference at the National Library Singapore and for loan at Jurong Regional Library)
The author draws on a range of ancient and current western sources to tell the history of impotence. Male sexuality and masculinity have always been constructed around the idea of potency for the purpose of procreation. In today's modern society, many view potency as a sign of a healthy and fulfilling sexual life.
This book also discusses the political and social effects of impotence, such as revolutionary unrests as a result of a king's failure to consummate his marriage. It also highlights gender relationships in a patriarchal society, where women have been blamed for men's sexual problems. Also covered are the causes and treatments of impotence, from "quack'' remedies of gland injections and apparatus such as vacuum pumps to drugs like the little blue pill (Viagra). This entertaining book will be of interest to general readers and medical practitioners.
