Singapore sees 6th dengue death

There has been another local dengue death, the sixth this year.

The patient was a 84-year-old Eurasian man. He was admitted to National University Hospital on Aug 22 after complaining of abdominal and back pain.

Tests showed that he had contracted dengue haemorrhagic fever. His condition deteriorated rapidly whilst in hospital. He passed away eight days later.

The Health Ministry urges the public to remain vigilant.

Those who feel unwell and have a fever should seek medical attention immediately. If they are diagnosed by the doctor to have dengue, they should follow the doctor's advice and ensure that they have adequate rest and drink enough water to prevent dehydration.

Suspect or confirmed dengue patients should protect themselves and their household members from mosquito bites by using, for example, mosquito repellent, mosquito coils or mosquito nets and by wearing protective clothing.

This will help protect their families from contracting the disease and break the chain of transmission.
