Dengue has killed an eighth person in Singapore this year.
The victim, Madam Tan Ai Liang, 60, lived in Jurong East, which is a dengue hotspot. This is the third dengue-related death in as many weeks.
Mdm Tan had fallen ill on Sept 9, developing a fever and body ache. She got better after visiting a GP, said one of Madam Tan's daughters, adding that nobody knew it was dengue as no one else in the family of four had been ill.
However, three days later, Mdm Tan's condition worsened and she complained of giddiness and abdominal discomfort. She passed away on Sept 15.
The number of dengue cases fell to 203 last week, a dip from the 211 cases two weeks ago. Around this time last year, the number of dengue cases per week hovered at the 60 mark.
As of 4pm yesterday, 90 cases have been reported for the current week. This year, 6,823 people have been infected so far.
According to the National Environment Agency, there are two hotspots in the area where Madam Tan lived. They are Jurong East St 21 (Blk 218, 219, 229) and Jurong East St 24 (Blk 248, 251, 257, 260).
