S'poreans not ready yet for euthanasia
Mon, Nov 10, 2008
my paper

I refer to the report, "No 'blessings' for euthanasia (The Straits Times, Nov 4).

Calls for the Advance Medical Directive (AMD) Act to be amended have engendered a healthy, albeit often emotive, debate.

As a Christian, I do not endorse the practice of euthanasia.

Whatever its motives and means, euthanasia means putting an end to the life of a sick, dying person. It is morally unacceptable.

Recent discussions on proposed changes to be made to the AMD have also been seen by some as a condoning of euthanasia.

Countries which legislate AMDs eventually moved on to legalise euthanasia, despite saying that they would not do the latter when legalising the former.

Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan has rightly pointed out that euthanasia is an ethical dilemma that Singapore has to confront.

I doubt Singaporeans are ready for euthanasia, as they have not shown much enthusiasm for the AMD.
