No panic in S'pore

DESPITE fears over the H1N1 flu outbreak abroad, Singaporeans are not panicking or rushing to their neighbourhood clinics at the slightest sneeze or sniffle.

A check with six doctors around Singapore found none of them reporting a sizeable rise in patient numbers.

Said Dr Chin Khong Ling of Healthway Sengkang: "I think Singaporeans are more tuned in to the news so they are well updated on the H1N1 virus. And the fact that there hasn?t been a case detected in Singapore stops them from panicking."

The doctors said they felt well-prepared, thanks to the lessons learnt from the Sars outbreak in 2003. Moreover, two known treatments, Tamiflu and Relenza, are available if needed.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry said eight Home Quarantine Orders had been issued to people arriving from Mexico - two foreigners and six Singaporeans.
