The New Paper

- Continue to improve management of common chronic diseases to prevent them from developing into more serious illnesses.

Medisave will be extended beyond the six chronic diseases, to include outpatient treatment of schizophrenia and major depression.

- Develop the 3Es (Eldersave, ElderShield and Elderfund), akin to the Medisave, MediShield, Medifund framework, to help meet needs for Intermediate and Long-term Care (ILTC).

- Public healthcare infrastructure will be expanded to meet growing needs of ILTC.

Khoo Teck Puat Hospital will open next year, and a new general hospital in Jurong will be opened by 2014. Beds are also being added in existing hospitals.

Major facilities being developed include the National Heart Centre, the Pathology and Research Centre at Outram, the second Heart Centre and the Cancer Centre at Kent Ridge and a new Communicable Disease Centre in Novena. The NUHS Dental Centre will also be expanded and see subsidised patients.

- Step up manpower expansion by recruiting and training 4,500 doctors, nurses, pharmacists, therapists, administrative and other staff.

Improve workflow with multi- disciplinary teams to deliver effective care.

- Expand the Agency for Integrated Care to help integrate care services so that patients can be cared for at the most appropriate settings.

This will prevent patients from incurring higher costs unnecessarily.

- A National Electronic Health Record (NEHR) system is being developed so that patient medical information can be shared across healthcare providers nationwide.
