MONTREAL, Canada - An elderly woman from Quebec City has become the fourth Canadian to die of the swine flu, health officials said Monday.
She died three days after she began showing symptoms of a respiratory ailment and was treated for pneumonia, Alain Poirier, Quebec province's director of public health, told a press conference.
Laboratory tests confirmed she had the swine flu.
Poirier did not specify her exact age, only that she was over 65 years old.
According to the Canadian Public Health Agency, more than 2,100 Canadians have been infected with the A(H1N1) virus.
Two Toronto men and a woman from northern Alberta have died of swine flu complications since April.
Globally, swine flu has spread to 73 countries with 25,288 people known to have been infected since the disease was first uncovered in April, the World Health Organization said.
In all, 139 deaths have been reported, according to the latest WHO tally of confirmed influenza A(H1N1) cases.
Most of the new cases have been reported by the United States, with 2,163 new infections, bringing its total caseload to 13,217, including 27 deaths.
