Alert on 2 illegal health items

The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) has warned the public not to not to take two illegal health products.

The two products, "Delima Raja Urat" - commonly packaged as a Malay Jamu medicine - and Chinese drug "Cao Gen Bai Lin Wan", have been found to contain potent western medicinal substances.

Two separate reports of serious adverse drug reactions were received from two general practitioners.

The first patient, a female who took the adulterated Malay Jamu medicine for more than one month for pain relief, had suffered symptoms of raised blood sugar level, which developed into diabetes mellitus.

The second, an elderly man who took "Cao Gen Bai Lin Wan" for more than two months to relieve joint pain had developed symptoms such as increased blood pressure, rapid weight gain, facial flushing and thinning of skin.

Both products were bought from overseas by the patients and are not sold locally.
