45mins: All it takes for treatment

By: Dawn Tay

FORTY-FIVE minutes is all an Influenza A (H1N1) patient would need for treatment at the Jurong Polyclinic, one of the first Pandemic Preparedness Clinics (PPCs) ready.

The PPCs are among measures by the Health Ministry to avoid overloading hospitals.

Dr Meena Sundram, head of the Jurong Polyclinic, answered these questions:

Is it safe to visit clinics designated as PPCs?

"It's probably safer than wandering around a shopping centre. We screen you right upfront."

Will I get the same treatment for H1N1 as I would in a hospital?

"PPCs will adopt the same screening measures as hospitals. Patients will get a good level of care at the polyclinic and those with complications will be sent to hospital."

When should I call 993 directly?

Those with complications such as pneumonia should call 993.

High-risk cases, such as dialysis and cancer patients, should contact their specialists before deciding whether to call 993.
