What is the right age to send your daughter to a gynaecologist?

Q: WHEN is the right age for my daughter to see a gynaecologist? - Roslina, Shah Alam

DR NOR ASHIKIN:
Teenage girls should see an OB/GYN between the ages of 13 to 15 or if she, or you as her mother, thinks something might be wrong, for example, an unusual vaginal discharge, abnormal periods, or if her abdomen is getting bigger, etc. While pelvic exams are rarely required during this first visit, this visit helps to establish a relationship with the doctor.

A gynaecologist will help your daughter understand how her body works and instruct her on how to do breast self-examination and also detect problems early such as cysts, fibroids or cancer by doing an ultrasound and treat it before it gets worse. Once she's sexually active the gynaecologist will instruct her on how to look after herself when having sex - what contraception is best for her, and how to protect herself from STDs.
