PETALING JAYA: Misuse of sexual enhancers such as penis rings can result in men permanently losing the functions of their genitals, says an expert.

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) head of urology and consultant urologist Professor Datuk Dr Zulkifli Md Zainuddin said one of the main issues was that many Malaysians were fond of using "self-prescribed" methods to improve their sex life.

PENIS RINGS

"They do not understand that it can go wrong in so many ways, instead they just think in the short term," he said.

"Take for example the use of penis rings. They were prescribed by doctors to aid people who had trouble maintaining an erection during intercourse.

"However, unlike metal ones you see in the news, the ones prescribed by us are made of silicone, which is stretchable and can be cut off easily if it gets stuck," he said when met after a talk on sexual habits Friday.

He explained that though men can buy proper penis rings from online sex stores, they resort to using improper ones, like ball bearing rings.

"These are metal and many of them are thick. You can't just cut it off and if left on for too long, these can cut off blood supply to your penis," he said during the talk titled "What The Fact of Sexual Habits".

He explained that cell death occurs after a mere six hours when blood supply is cut off, causing irreversible damage to the penis.

"Even if we manage to cut the ring off and return blood supply to the penis, it would first, not function the same way anymore and second, no longer look the same.

"The person would have an 'ugly' penis for the rest of their lives," he said, adding that amputation may be required in worst case scenarios.

SILICONE INJECTIONS

Dr Zulkifli said that although cases involving penis rings are reported on frequently, the more common enhancers used are silicone injections.

"They want a big penis and they do not want the bother or embarrassment of going to a doctor for consultation, so they just go over to a place 'their friend' told them about and have it injected.

"What they do not understand is that the penis becomes like plastic in the long term. It just does not function anymore and the person loses all sensation.

"When this happens, we literally have to remove all of the outer skin layer on and around the penis. It is a painful process and, again, the manhood will never look the same again," he said, explaining that the process is like a skin graft.

GAMBIR SARAWAK

Another "horror tool" that has left men with a dysfunctional penis is a liquid from east Malaysia, which supposedly prevents premature ejaculation.

Dr Zulkifli explained that the liquid, which is to be applied on the penis, is supposed to cause a "tingly feeling".

"It emanates a tingly feeling, kind of like what pepper would do to your skin.

"But in the moment of excitement, people use too much of it at once and this would result in 'burning' your penis," he said.

He explained that the effects usually lead to gangrene.

"Again you either lose your manhood altogether or will never be able to use it the same way again," he said.

TONGKAT ALI

On the popular Tongkat Ali herb, Dr Zulkifli said it is ineffective.

"The drinks available in shops are just sugar. Lots of sugar. If anything, the accumulation of sugar will lead to diabetes and eventually erectile dysfunction.

"The only time Tongkat Ali has worked is on rats. It has only ever been tested on rats and never on humans, so expecting it to work in improving intercourse is just ridiculous," he said.
