Q. I have small cyst-like lumps all over my body. I was diagnosed as having a genetic disorder called steatocystoma multiplex, although no one in my family has it.

I have looked it up on the Internet and it seems that only surgery can remove the cysts, but it causes scarring. Please advise me on whether there is a cure for it.

A. You are right that steatocystoma multiplex is a genetic disorder and it is transmitted in an autosomal dominant manner, meaning there is a 50 per cent chance of a child from the next generation getting it.

However, it may not show up in some individuals because severity varies. The small lumps are actually cysts containing sebum or oil, and the good news is that it is a condition that affects the skin only.

There are, unfortunately, no creams that can help the condition. Occasionally, antibiotics may be necessary if inflammation occurs.

The only treatment available currently is surgical removal of the cysts. For cysts on the face, aspiration or drainage can be done to avoid scarring.

Unfortunately, this is only a temporary measure as the cysts can recur. I would suggest that you see a dermatologist or plastic surgeon who will advise you on the best method of treatment based on the location and size of the cysts.
